Set up Taxes

Use the Setup app Setup app icon to set up your taxes on the Web Dashboard or on any of your Clover devices. When a tax is added or changed, the changes will sync automatically across all devices.
This section includes how to:

  • Add a new tax
  • Edit a tax
  • Delete a tax
  • Set a default tax rate
  • Enable tax to be removed from an order

Add a tax rate

Available on Register and Register Lite Plans

This feature is only available on Register and Register Lite Plans. Learn about our Service Plans.

Your Clover device can apply a variety of tax rates to transactions. These can be added to the default amount.

To add a tax rate:

  1. Open the Setup app .
  2. Tap Taxes on the left nav.
  3. Tap Tax rates.
  4. Tap add icon (+ ) button on the bottom right of the screen.
  5. Enter a name in the field for the new Tax Rate on the first line.
  6. Enter a Tax Percentage.
  7. Select Default (will be added to any items with Default Taxes turned on) to add it your default tax rate.
  8. Tap Save.

    Good to know

    Taxes set as Default Taxes are applied automatically to any items using the default tax rate. If you have more than one default tax, all default taxes are applied to that item.


Edit a tax rate

Available on Register and Register Lite Plans

This feature is only available on Register and Register Lite Plans. Learn about our Service Plans.

Use this feature to edit a tax rate:

  • Change tax rate.
  • Change percentage.
  • Change the tax default status.

To edit a tax rate:

  1. Open the Setup app .
  2. Tap a Taxes on the left nav.
  3. Tap Tax rates to view the list of tax rates already defined.
  4. Tap the tax you want to change.
  5. Edit the current settings for:
    • Tax Rate.
    • Tax Percentage.
    • Default (will be added to any items with Default Taxes turned on) setting..
  6. Tap Save.

Delete a tax rate

Available on Register and Register Lite Plans

This feature is only available on Register and Register Lite Plans. Learn about our Service Plans.

You can delete a tax rate at any time from any device or Web Dashboard. 

To delete a tax rate:

  1. Open the Setup app .
  2. Tap Taxes on the left nav.
  3. Tap Tax rates.
  4. Select tax to be deleted.
  5. Tap Delete icon (trash can) on the top right of the screen.
  6. Tap Delete.

Set a default tax rate

Available on Register and Register Lite Plans

This feature is only available on Register and Register Lite Plans. Learn about our Service Plans.

Default taxes are automatically added to items you sell. If you assigned more than one default tax, all default taxes are applied to the item.

To edit a tax rate:

  1. Open the Setup app .
  2. Tap a Taxes on the left nav.
  3. Tap Tax rates to view the list of tax rates already defined.
  4. Tap the tax you want to change.
  5. Select Default (will be added to any items with Default Taxes turned on) to add this to the default tax rate.
    Uncheck the box to remove this default tax rate.
  6. Tap Save.

Enable tax to be removed from an order

Available on Register and Register Lite Plans

Use the Setup app setupapp-app-store_4308434181250479349_200x200.png to allow employees to remove taxes from an order. If you allow employees to remove taxes, a “Remove Tax” option will appear when taking a payment.

Good to know

This feature is currently available in the U.S. only.

To enable removing tax from an order:

  1. Open Setup app setupapp-app-store_4308434181250479349_200x200.png.
  2. Tap Taxesin the left nav.
  3. Select Allow tax to be removed from an order.

    Good to know

    By default, new order types are set to taxable.
