Major style update for Register app

High Impact
March 2, 2017 to March 23, 2017

The Register app  is being updated to make the process of taking orders faster and easier by:

  • Grouping actions that affect orders, such as applying discounts to orders and adding service charges, into one overflow menu that can be easily accessed
  • Moving the Open Cash Drawer option into an overflow menu to make it more secure; you can use the Setup app  to automatically open the cash drawer when a customer uses a specific tender type
  • Simplifying the steps to add multiple items, add modifiers, and create custom items

See below for details about these major changes:

  • Animated tutorial
  • Overflow menus containing Register app actions
  • New menu with links to Register settings, Orders app, and Help apps
  • Quantity bar update
  • Custom item creation process improvement
  • Modifier selection improvement
  • Order-level discount application process improvement
  • Partial payment by splitting custom amount improvement

Note

Go to Settings if you want to change the font size.

Animated Tutorial

The first time any employee opens the Register app, an animated tutorial highlights the actions that have moved into new menus:

  • Add Order Discount and Clear Order have been moved into the left overflow menu
  • View All Items, Custom Item, and Open Cash Drawer have been moved into the right overflow menu

This tutorial lasts about 15 seconds and can be skipped by tapping SKIP on the lower right as the tutorial plays. To replay the it, tap REPLAY on the bottom left after the tutorial finishes. To exit the tutorial and begin using Register app, tap anywhere else on the screen.

To see this tutorial again after exiting it, create a new employee and then open the Register app. This tutorial will stop displaying to new employees after a few months.

Overflow menus containing Register app actions

We are moving some of the Register app actions into overflow menus so you can use them while taking orders. Previously, some of these actions could only be used on the Payments screen.

The first overflow menu is on the left side of the screen, next to the printer icon. This overflow menu contains actions affecting orders:

  • Add Note: add an order note to an Order Receipt
  • Edit Order Type: change order type
  • Add Order Discount: add a discount to the entire order
  • Add Service Charge: add a service charge to the order
  • Remove Tax: removes tax from an order
  • Show Summary: see a summary of all items on the order
  • Clear Order: saves the current order to the Orders app and lets you start a new order

Note

The actions in the overflow menu will only appear if specific options in Register Settings screen are set:

  • Add Note only appears if Allow notes on orders is checked in Settings
  • Add Order Discount will become Remove Order Discount if a discount is applied to the order
  • Add Service Charge only appears if Enable service charge is checked in Setup app > Service Charge
  • Remove Tax only appears if Allow tax to be removed from an order is checked in Settings; it will change to Undo Remove Tax if tax has been removed from an order
  • Show Summary only appears on Clover Mobile and Clover Mini

The second overflow menu is on the upper right corner and contains actions not related to changing orders:

  • View All Items: displays all items in list view; changes to View by Category when selected, which displays items by category
  • Custom Item: add a custom item to an order

  • Open Cash Drawer: open a connected cash drawer

  • Help: go to the Clover Help site

New menu with links to Register settings, Orders app, and Help app

We are adding a new menu on the upper left corner of the home screen, which contains a link to the Orders app , settings for the Register app, and a Help  link to the Clover Help “Taking Orders (from the Register app)” guide.

Tap Settings to see the Register app settings. Some of these settings can also be found in the Setup app :

  • Allow notes on Orders (not printed on customer receipts): check this to allow writing notes on Order Receipts
  • Remain in category after adding an item to an order: check this to remain in the same category screen after adding an item to an order; if this is not checked, adding an item will return you to the Register app home screen

  • Automatically group similar items: check this to group similar items into one line

  • Enable Fast Pay with cash: check this to enable Fast Pay With Cash

  • Enable quantity (QTY) bar on items screen: check this to display the quantity bar in Register app; this setting is device-specific and needs to be enabled on each individual device

  • Allow taxes to be removed from an order: check this to enable removing taxes from an order

  • Tap SEE ADDITIONAL SETTINGS to go to the Setup app

Quantity bar update

To make it easier to add multiple quantities of an item, you can show the quantity bar at the top of the items screen. Previously, to access the quantity bar, you had to tap the Quantity button to expand the quantity bar.

Note

To show the quantity bar, check Enable quantity (QTY) bar on items screen in Register Settings. See details above.

There are 10 preset number buttons; you can change all of them except ‘1.’

To change a preset number button in the quantity bar:

  1. Tap any number, except ‘1’
  2. Enter the number in the number pad
  3. Tap SET QUANTITY

Custom item creation process improvement

In addition to Custom Item in the right overflow menu, every category in the Register app will have “Custom Item” at the end of the category. This makes it easier for you to create a custom item when taking an order, no matter which category you’re in.

A new option, Add & Create Another, will allow you to stay on the Custom Item screen to add more custom items. This is helpful if you need to make a quick sale that includes multiple custom items.

If you check Add to Inventory when creating a custom item, you will be taken to the Inventory app  after tapping Add Item or Add & Create Another, where you can add additional information about the item being added to the inventory.

To create a custom item:

  1. Open Register app
  2. Tap Custom Item in a category; it will be the last item in the category
    • You can also tap the overflow menu on the upper right, then tap Custom Item
  3. Use the number pad to enter a price for the custom item
  4. (Optional) Tap the blue pencil icon next to Item Name to name the custom item
  5. (Optional) Uncheck the Taxable checkbox if you do not want the item to be taxable
  6. (Optional) Check the Add to inventory checkbox to add the custom item to your inventory after you add the item to an order
  7. Tap Add Item to add the item to the order and leave the Custom Item screen, or tap Add & Create Another to add the item to the order and stay on the Custom Item screen to add another custom item

Two ways to view modifier groups in Register app

We are adding the option to choose between two ways to show modifier groups:

  • View all modifier groups on one scrollable screen; tap a modifier group name at the top to auto-scroll to that group (new style)
  • View modifiers in a modifier group, one group at a time; tap modifier group name at the top to select a new group (old style)
     > This view is recommended if you have items with over 50 individual modifiers assigned to them

To switch how you see modifier groups:

  1. Open Register app
  2. Tap the menu button on the upper left
  3. Tap Settings
  4. Uncheck or check View all modifier groups at a time option, at the bottom of the Settings screen
    • Uncheck: Each modifier group will appear in a tab, one tab at a time
      • This view is recommended if you have items with over 50 individual modifiers assigned to them
    • Check: All modifier groups will appear on one scrollable screen

Modifier selection improvement

When you tap a modifier, the button will display a quantity number on the right side and a minus button on the left side.

  • Tap the number on the right to increase modifier quantity
  • Tap the minus button on the left to decrease modifier quantity
  • Tap the center to remove the modifier from the order

If a modifier group has a minimum or maximum requirement, multiple quantities of one modifier will count towards meeting the requirements.

For example, a customer wants to buy a sandwich that requires them to select two modifiers. There are only three modifiers to choose from: lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. If the customer does not like lettuce or onions, they can choose tomatoes twice to satisfy the modifier requirement.

The Pay button will also be disabled if the modifier quantity exceeds the maximum requirement.

Order-level discount application process improvement

Discounts to an entire order can be applied or removed by using Add Order Discount and Remove Order Discount in the order section overflow menu.

Previously, to apply a discount to an entire order, you needed to tap the Discount button at the bottom of the screen, then choose to apply a discount to the subtotal.

To apply a discount to an entire order:

  1. Open Register app
  2. Add at least one item to an order
  3. Tap the left overflow menu button in the orders section
  4. Tap Add Order Discount
  5. Select a discount option
  6. If you want to remove the discount, tap Remove Order Discount in the overflow menu

Partial payment by splitting custom amount improvement

When using SPLIT BY CUSTOM AMOUNT and choosing Custom to set a partial payment, the next payment defaults to the remaining amount instead of the previous partial payment amount.

For example, you have an order costing $20, and the customer makes a custom partial payment of $5. Instead of the next payment defaulting to $5 and requiring you enter $15 manually, you can just tap Full Amount to pay the remaining cost.

To make a custom partial payment:

  1. Open Register app
  2. Add items to an order, then tap Pay
  3. Tap SPLIT CUSTOM AMOUNT
  4. Tap Custom
  5. Enter the amount being paid, then tap PAY
  6. Select a payment method and complete the transaction
  7. Once transaction is completed:
    • Tap Next Payment to immediately make the next partial payment, which will default to the remaining amount
    • Tap Pay More Later to save the current order; it will be listed in the Orders app as “Partially Paid”
